Madrid's El Prado gallery explores the concept of the landscape painting in a new exhibition.
MADRID, SPAIN, July 27, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- El Prado has opened the doors to its latest exhibition entitled Rome: Nature and the Ideal - Landscapes 1600-1650.
The display, organised in partnership with Rmn-Grand Palais and Musee du Louvre, features more than 100 works and aims to explore the development of this type of art.
According to the venue, the whole concept of landscape painting was essentially born in Rome in the 17th century, as artists experimented with painting the Eternal City's buildings at different times of day to see how it changed the resulting picture.
"Until the late 16th century, landscape was considered a minor artistic genre by art theoreticians and on certain occasions was treated as a speciality confined to the painters who had moved from northern Europe to Italy," a representative remarked in a statement.
The exhibition at El Prado only differs from the one that went on display at Paris's Grand Palais in that it features a selection of landscape paintings commissioned by Philip IV.
Opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday between 09:00 and 20:00 local time, with admission costing EUR10 (GBP8.80). Various concessions are available.
